Niko / TMML Studio
//「精米步合」是日本清酒的核心術語,指糙米(玄米)經過研磨後,留下來的白米重量佔原糙米重量的百分比。例如:精米步合 60% 代表磨去了 40% 的米外層,僅用剩下的 60% 米心來釀酒。//
We have invited Niko Leung from @TMML Studio to be the Artist-in-Community at Luk Heung Commons, leading a 4-day co-creation workshop with the kaifongs, turning Tai Po construction site soil into usable clay.
We'll be collecting earth from construction sites in Tai Po and refining it into three different levels of fineness - from coarse, granular clay that keeps its raw texture, to fine powder suitable for tableware.
// Seimaibuai (精米步合) is a term in Japanese sake production that refers to the percentage of white rice remaining after milling away the outer layers of brown rice (genmai). For example, a seimaibuai of 60% means 40% of the outer grain has been milled away, leaving only 60% of the starchy core for brewing. //
The concept is similar to sake's seimaibuai: the more you refine, the purer and more consistent the material becomes. We'll be exploring what each level of refinement offers, as well as what it takes away. The coarse sand and small stones naturally present in soil can give fired ceramics a rich, varied texture. When soil or stone weathered from certain rocks, granite, for instance, the mineral particles can appear as white, translucent, pink, or orange flecks after high-temperature firing.
But that same richness can also make clay difficult to work with. For tableware, clay that's too gritty will leak, can't be properly cleaned, and feels rough against the mouth. Refining the clay, removing large particles and grinding it down to a consistent powder, makes the material purer and more reliable in production.
The workshop will begin with collecting soil, and move on to processing (sieving, foot wedging), working the clay into three distinct levels of fineness. From there, we'll make brick and tableware moulds, and invite a local calligrapher to write「大埔」(TAI PO), which will then be embossed or carved onto the bricks. By the end of the workshop, we aim to produce 100–150 standard clay bricks (approximately 2.5kg each) across three textures, from coarse and gritty to fine and smooth.
Some bricks will remain unfired for immediate use. A small number will be fired as commemorative pieces (paperweight/ bookend). The finer clay will go toward a limited tableware series, likely in collaboration with a local illustrator.
Firing will take place offsite after the workshop ends. Once fired, finished pieces will return to Luk Heung Commons for display, and will later be shared and sold at an art market.
